Expert Tip. In many respects, Palermo is a thoroughly modern city. Music, fashion and the arts are all thriving, but take a visit to the centre of old Palermo and little seems to have changed over the centuries. A maze of narrow streets, alleyways and barbers shops rub shoulders with baroque churches and sweeping piazzas. Look out for the lively markets that have been running for more than 100 years in the Albergheria and Vucciria quarters.
